Maza of the Moon Annotated eBook Otis Adelbert Kline Ron Miller
Maza is victim of her father's kindness in granting freedom to some oriental moon-types who figure out once again how to make their deadly green ray. Maza's people are descended from ancient Martians and of course have a red ray.The Earth inventor starts out launching a projectile at the moon to win government offered prize money. Gee, this could be a modern story, because NASA is offering such prize money now! But he accidentally hits the capital city of the evil moon orientals, which he doesn't know exists. They fight back. Oops!
The moon has underground very large caves with life of various sorts, mostly feeding off of fungal plant life. Different in detail from Burroughs hollow moon which is gravitationally unsound as there is no gravity inside a hollow shell. And a much quicker and pleasanter resolution than Burroughs moon series (which is depressing). Kline wins the moon-novel contest, I think.

Maza of the Moon Annotated eBook Otis Adelbert Kline Ron Miller Reviews
I must say that this book, if cleaned up a bit, even today would make a movie rivaling any of the star wars saga.
An underground civilization on the moon, ticked off by our destroying one of their cities, albeit accidentally, starts dropping nuclear mines onto Earth. All this in 1929.
Intrepid Indiana Jones like scientist and adventurer goes to the Moon, and finds underground civilizations, armor and ray guns, light sabers and dragons. Wow!
Not to mention Maza, a kick-ass princess.
The only stumbling block is the 1930's stereotype of Asians as sly and duplicitous. Needs some PC editing there.
Otherwise a great read for any teenage would-be princess or Luke Skywalker.
The book on the whole was not bad. The way it read it seemed that Kline was slowly but surely building a tale and then suddenly realized that he had a deadline and quickly slapped together a rather disappointing ending. His other books are so much better.
This is Otis Kline's only planetary romance not set on Venus or Mars. It's interesting in having the hero, Ted Dustin, start the conflict, though unintentionally. The most interesting aspect of the book is probably the sheer number of pulp genre tropes Kline plays with here--everything from yellow peril reminiscent of Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu to Buck Rogers-style gadgetry to ERB-like planetary romance to space opera. Unfortunately Maza doesn't hold together very well. Pacing is uneven. This is unusual for Kline, who after his first novel, generally had a solid feel for how to pace his stories. Dustin does a number of stupid things that, rather than build suspense, are jarringly out of joint with his actions at other times. Many scenes--especially the climax--are rushed and not developed properly. It just feels as if Kline just didn't apply himself as well as he could have. On the other hand, the parts where he does apply himself shine. Overall, this can't come close to matching his best work sadly.
